Mews - (usually used with a singular verb) Chiefly British.
a. (formerly) an area of stables built around a small street.
b. a street having small apartments converted from such stables.
I passed by the Washington Square Mews many times, but I thought it was some kind of inside joke. The school paper was the Washington Square News. I learned this word from one of my clients who is a real estate agent.
Palaeoarachnologist - Someone who studies ancient spiders.
I discovered this one reading Science Daily.

The meaning of palaeoarachnologist is easy to guess, but I didn't expect such a profession to exist.

I'm actually quite pleased that I now know the meaning of the word mews. It's one of those words I've seen in novels but never looked up because it was in the description stuff and didn't seem important.

I once thought it was an alternate spelling of "meows".

It is. "Mews" is actually singular. "Mew" is a variant of "Myu", which is the Japanese version of "meow". See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Mew_Mew
