Robot Design
Mon Jan 4, 2010 12:52:13 pm
I have spent the last two days trying to design a robot that does not look creepy. It's much more difficult than I thought it would be. My early attempts looked like aliens, and a few looked like harlequin babies. All of them were creepy. I realized that the problem was trying to look too human without getting the subtle details right. To remove the creepiness, I had to make it more like a machine than like a person.
This is the tentative design:

The Wall-e/Johnny Five look would have been easier, but I do not want to have intellectual property issues.

The body shape is too unique. Anything resembling that would look like an obvious imitation.

What is the robot for? To go with the lamp?

This is the plan for the animation:1) A UFO flies by.
2) Everything on this desk begins to shake:

3) The lamp falls off the desk.
4) The robot pulls off the lamp shade and puts it on its head.
5) Light emerges from the lampshade.

I think making it less human is how you make it less creepy.

That was my conclusion.

I deleted them, but they are easy to create. I may redesign one and post it.

My favorite robot...
Was that on Saved by the Bell? I only watched a few episodes and never saw a robot, but the file name suggests that it was on the show.

The one on the right looks like a blender/lamp hybrid. The purple one reminds me of a parasitic plant.

Fat robots are also cute and non-threatening:

Interesting. I may use this as the basis for another project.

You should morph yourself and that robot to see what your babies look like.
