Searching for Orthographic Pornography
Mon Jan 25, 2010 2:06:18 am

I want to make a 3D model of a human. Finding usable reference photos for this has been challenging. I decided to settle on just modeling the head, but even that is difficult. Very few photos that I could find give a good side view. The few that I could find did not have matching front views that I could use together. There are problems with differences in facial expression, weight, or age in all the high resolution photos that I could find.

I tried searching for mug shots, but I could not find high resolution ones. I thought maybe tennis players would have many side view photos taken during matches, but I only found low resolution side views. After several hours of looking at photos of Maria Sharapova, I found an excellent high resolution photo of the left side of Ashley Tisdale's head. I'm not sure why she appeared in the search results for images of Sharapova.

Maybe you could use yourself as the reference model?

I have to get someone to photograph me for that. I tried to photograph myself, but my arms are not long enough and the side views are exceptionally difficult to align correctly. I can't use the timer, because the button for that is broken.

Is there someone who could take the picture for you? Or have you settled on Ashley Tisdale?

I'm also unclear on what kind of 3D model you want to make--computer generated or physical?

I settled on Tisdale for my first model, but I want more. I am making computer 3D models for animation.

Interesting. Do you know how long (approx) this project is going to take?

I already have most of her head finished. It's only missing ears and a mouth. I left the most difficult parts for last.

Hairs are also not done.

Do you have any plans for it when you're finished?

Not with this specific model. This one is just for practice. I can't really use it, because the side and front photos don't match well. I had to estimate averages between the two. I also had to guess a lot about the curvature of the parts of the head covered by hair.

Have you found new images yet that you can use for future models, or are you waiting until the first one is completely finished?

The next one will probably be Sharapova, but her photos have the same problems. The front and side views have different facial expressions.

Maybe you will get better at estimating the averages to create the models if you have to keep doing it this way.

It's a more advanced technique. I would prefer to start out the easy way, but I can't without good reference photos.

Do they need to be exact?

That depends on what "they" refers to. The final product doesn't need to be exact for what I am doing now, but the front and side photos should be very exact in alignment with each other.

I was referring to the front and side photos.

If you posted about this on OKCupid, you would probably get many photo submissions, but their exactitude is dubious.
