I also would not. There are too many of them in my family already.

This is not based on aesthetics.

I would also advise against John. I have never liked my name.

I prefer unique names. Based on the ones I've chosen so far, I've figured out that if I ever have a daughter, she will probably like her name; if I ever have a son, he will probably change his name the moment he can do so.

It's common practice for Chinese to give all their children a common first character for their given names to indicate that they are siblings, it becomes a problem in the west when people don't realise that those are two characters in the given name and omit the second one.

Well, I disagree with your, er . . . disagreeing.

I still think Harry Potter would have been awesome. Then I could be all, "Yeah, I met Jo before she ever wrote those books. Bitch stole my name, and I never received a penny in royalties." And they'd be all, "Really?" And I'd say, "No, I made that up. But it's a neat coincidence, isn't it?" And they'd go, ". . ."

It is still a work in progress.

It might eventually become so awesome that I say fuck it, and replace my name with it.
Tue Apr 20, 2010 11:52:04 pm
I would start calling you Leslie.

Wed Apr 21, 2010 12:28:29 am
Then I'd call you by some other name, but the principle would be the same. You said that if you change your name you're still going to go by Nikki. If you would refuse to call me by my chosen name, I would not call you by your chosen name.
But this is all hypothetical. I doubt I'll change my name, so it doesn't matter.

Only to make a point. Calling someone by a name they dislike enough to change it, AFTER they've changed it, when disliking it is the only reason for changing it, when they've found a name they like a thousand times better, is not fair to that person. It is, in fact, cruel.
