One of my clients decided to pay me a higher hourly rate than I asked for. He said I'm worth it, and I accepted that. He has started sending me emails asking me to do extra work with the implication that there should be no extra charge because they are small tasks. I have done them, because he was already overpaying and I thought of that as covering the cost of the extra work. He still hasn't asked for anything so substantial that the overpayment wouldn't cover it, but I'm getting the feeling that it was his original intent when overpaying me, and he is trying to escalate to the point where it would be advantageous for him.

I don't know why people take advantage of others like this. At the very least, burning bridges doesn't leave one in a good position when a real need for help arises.
