Eyepatch
Fri Jun 4, 2010 6:04:47 pm

I'm considering the possibility of getting an eyepatch. My left eye has been significantly weaker for the past three days. Since a training accident when I was young, my left eye has had problems. I can usually see very clearly through that eye, but vision in the eye gets noticeably weaker around once a week. It isn't entirely random. My left eye tends to be weaker when I am more tired regardless of the reason for tiredness. It's not necessarily associated with anything like reading a lot. I can do a lot of physical activity and still have the same effect.

I discovered that I can fix the vision in my left eye if I close my right eye for a while. Forcing myself to use my left eye somehow gets it to start functioning again. I could just keep my right eye closed, but it gets to be tiring after a while. I think an eyepatch might be good for me. It's not an unprecedented technique. Ophthalmologists have used eyepatches to fix amblyopia in the past, although that is becoming less common.

I may need to get a new sword to match.

Have you tried the eye exercises you used to do? The ones in this post:

Yes. In the past, it worked well and lasted several days. Over the past three days, the exercises have only had beneficial effects for about an hour. I did extra exercise today and I have had good vision for the past few hours.

Maybe because your eyes are older they require more exercise to achieve the same benefit.

I don't think it's that because the change was very sudden and intense. My left eye last week was functioning about the same as it was 20 years ago. It's only in the past three days that I have had significant visual problems.

I'm out of ideas, but Google recommends Lasik Institute.

Definitely not my style. I will do more eye exercises and resume eye massage. I did eye massage in the morning every day for many years. I stopped when I got cats because they contaminated my hands. I got a bad eye infection and stopped. I don't have cats now. I really should resume.

How does one do an eye massage?

Gentle circular motion with eyes closed. The force gets transmitted through the eyelid.

Interesting. Are the effects the same as any other kind of tissue massage?

There are some extra sensitive spots on the eye that change. They stop being sensitive after massaging for about a minute. Some people believe that it is similar to reflexology when massaging these points.

I was thinking about that this morning. My fingertips were wrinkly after washing my hands. This is something that frequently happened when I was young, but I don't recall it happening within the last 25 years. I have been sweating a lot more recently due to the hotter weather. I might not be getting enough water and electrolytes to compensate.

This is very interesting. I'm going to try this. Does it work on headaches, too?

I have two different types of sensitive spots on my eyes. Some only hurt if I apply pressure over a large area, and others only hurt if I focus the pressure to a small point. The ones that hurt over a large area can be activated with just pressure. The others are best stimulated with circular movement.

It sounds like a blood-flow deficiency, but that isn't much help if you know of no more effective ways to promote blood flow to the eye than have already been mentioned.

Also, pictures or the eyepatch isn't true.

I know of ways to promote blood flow, but that becomes risky. I have a nose bleed problem in my left nostril. It doesn't happen often now, but it was a very common occurrence when I was young. It happened at least once a week, which was enough to cause anemia.
