Escalating Procrastination
Tue Aug 10, 2010 3:09:46 pm

I am getting very close to finishing the diamond website, but I am experiencing tremendous difficulty in finishing it, because I can't stay focused. I think the problem is a diminishing sense of urgency. Now I know that the amount of work left is manageable, so there is less need to rush. This is not good.

I experience the opposite. Once I get close to finishing a task I will work longer and harder than I probably should just to get through with it.

I only do this if it's for one of my own projects. If I do something for someone else, I never do that.

I usually have trouble getting things started. Once they're begun, focusing requires no effort.

Starting things is easy if the compensation is good, but the compensation somehow loses its appeal by the time I get near the end.

I am totally like you Erdos but even worse. I start and then get distracted and then stop 10 minutes later. I really need help focusing. I am not sure but if I were honest with myself on why I don't finish through..then I'll at least know why. Lol, I've got distracted from doing that too. It seems I want to relax 24/7. I dunno.

Naw. I remember a time when I was excited to start a project, work 110% on it, and finish comfortably by the deadline.

No clue except that I lost my competitive streak. I've been in complacency for far too long.

Being complacent is not necessarily bad as long as you get essential things done.

It's not good enough for me..like brushing my teeth is essential. But I feel incomplete if I don't floss them and listerine them, they are need to get rid of gingivitis, hidden plaque. But I settled for twice brushing.
I'm too comfortable in my situation.

But enough about me, can you force yourself into making and completing miniature goals to finish the very little that is left? Like make a link in 30 seconds. Then do engage in whatever distraction for 10 minutes. Then complete another miniature goal in the site. Then distraction time. Then miniature goal time.

I don't work well with the goal concept. I just do some work for a few minutes and engage in distractions for a few minutes. What I do is very unpredictable in terms of the amount of work that is involved. If I set a goal for something that seems fairly simple before I start, it can turn out to be something that actually takes a whole week. Waiting until that is finished before I can do something else would feel too much like enslavement.

Lol, I'm exactly the same. I feel enslaved by the concept presented in my suggestion.

Then why did you present that concept?

Heh, I was going to mention that it was stupid to have mentioned that concept but I didn't know if it would work for you.. until you said it yourself it wouldn't.

None of the normal methods work for me.
