The Photography Problem
Sat Aug 14, 2010 5:33:18 pm
The photos on the current version of the diamond site that I am working on are horrible. Many of them are blurry and none of them show any color. There is no rainbow of colors in the sparkle. It's just a bunch of overexposed white dots on a blurry grey gem. There are significant problems that make the photos look very amateurish, but they were taken by someone who is supposedly a professional photographer. The worst part is that the photographer is the wife of the owner of the company. This has caused his judgment to be distorted.
The project manager and I have been conspiring to get a better photographer. I had suggested someone I know who worked with me on a different site. This photographer has raised his rates since the last project and the manager doesn't want to pay that much. I could theoretically take the photos. The current photos are so bad that it's very easy to take better ones without any training, and I have prior experience with doing the photography for a different diamond site. However, I can't do the photography because the manager is fixated on the belief that only a professional photographer can do this.

Ask him to consider a test. You'll photograph jewelery, like a bunch,10 pictures of different jewelery, but don't tell it's from you. Say its from a photographer you know or something similar. Ask manager if the photographs presented are better than the ones on the site. Ask manager if this photographer's skill is better than the one on the site is caring to show. And finally ask if this photographer would be a better person to photograph the website products. Let it sink in..
then tell manager to not get mad..
and then spill the beans.

One problem with getting accepted as the photographer for this project is that it doesn't pay well. I get far more for developing and maintaining the website.then tell manager to not get mad..

Both the manager and owner are men.

Just tell him you will take one picture and prove you can do a better job. ;-)

I still haven't decided if I want to do this. Although I only get a commission on the first 10 sales, there are some long term benefits for me if this site is successful. I could consider it an investment to work for less money doing the photography.no image

Tell him your identical twin is a professional photographer. Make sure to style your hair a little differently and wear clothing they haven't seen you in before, when you show up to take the pictures.

It already looks very bad because the manager has micromanaged the design aspect. I have already decided to not include this site in my portfolio when presenting my work to new clients.

But I probably should still try to salvage the site.

For your own pride at least. Are you going to let us see the final product?

It's too horrible to show. I may show it if I can convince the manager to let me have more artistic control, but that is improbable.

This is the original look for the site that I proposed. Identifying information has been blurred.

Yeah, for diamonds that expensive...they look like fake glass rings.
The fake glass look is from one of the photos that the owner's wife took.
