A $434.37 Gamble
Thu Aug 19, 2010 2:26:49 am

I just bought a crippled camera which I intend to modify into a very good one, but the operation is very risky. The Sigma DP1s has a very good sensor and a horrible lens. It has the same Foveon X3 sensor used in their far more expensive cameras. The horrible lens is fixed and not designed for a user to change. My plan is to somehow remove the bad lens and convert the camera into a true DSLR by replacing the front case with something that has a lens mount.

Because the surgery is very risky and can make the camera permanently unusable, I will not be doing that right away. Part of the reason that I bought it today is that the owner of the jewelry company agreed to let me take some photos. My current camera probably is good enough to take far better photos than the ones that are on the site, but I wanted some extra insurance. Also, I have been wanting to do this experiment for a long time and the price just got reduced by $170, because the DP2 was recently released.

Good luck with your gamble, Sir. I'm glad to hear that the [blurrrrrrred] diamond dealer has decided to swallow their pride.

I have never attempted to repair a digital camera, although I notice many people have recently suggested I get into the cell phone repair field. I am not so sure that would be worth the effort, though.

Please allow 4 - 14 weeks for delivery? The Pony Express ain't what it used to be.

Cell phone repair is very complex and time consuming. I would not do it.

You have a specific plan of execution?

Not yet. I have to examine the camera first. I don't know where the screws are or how complex it is to dismantle without causing irreversible damage. I expect some difficulty, because the main difference between this camera and one that sells for $800 more is the ability to mount an SLR lens on the more expensive one.

So do you have a manual or anything, or are you just winging it? Or is your experience with the other camera enough?

Just winging it. The manual wouldn't help, because I intend to do something that a normal user should never do. I'm certain that this will void the warranty.

What if you mess it up?

Then I lose my money. That is why this is a gamble.

But, in the event that you do fuck up, the experience will make it worth it, hopefully?

The experience with the specific technology, I mean.

Not really. Risky camera modification is a very expensive hobby.

Too expensive for it to be something that I would do regularly.
