I like a pop song!

It's from 2008, but it is still shocking. I had not heard it earlier despite it's popularity, because I abandoned normal music some time in the early 90's.

Not sufficiently melodic for my preferences. There is one Satriani song that I liked, but I don't remember what it is.

I can't determine if there was any rip-off, and if so who was attempting to rip off who, but I am generally critical of “intellectual property” laws.

My favorite of his is Big Bad Moon, but I won't embed it because I suspect it is too abrasive for most people's tastes. If anyone should happen to look it up on YouTube, I'd like to advise scrolling down to the HD version, and stay away from the top search result because the equalization is terrible.

I like both of the covers of Viva La Vida, but of course those don't fall into the questionable realm of plagiarism, because the compositional source is obvious.

I thought that "sampling" was an established legally acceptable practice.http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/coldplay-settles-joe-satriani-lawsuit-220134

It remains a highly contested practice, wherein artists will request “clearance” (permission) to use a sample, often in exchange for a one-time fee or a share of royalties, and artists will sue other artists for using samples without permission. The issue in Satriani vs. Coldplay isn't one of sampling, though. Sampling means using an exact copy of the original work, although it may then be manipulated such that it looks/sounds different. What Coldplay was accused of doing was artistic appropriation, which is similar to academic plagiarism when no direct quotes are lifted from a source, yet the same essential ideas and statements are made, without credit being given.
Such instances of “cheating” (if you will) are very difficult to prove, because the accused can claim it was merely a coincidence, which is usually a plausible explanation in the absence of strong correlation, such as the exact sequence of ideas/statements presented in an academic paper as compared to a non-cited source.

re: comment#9
Do you hear the similarity? I don't.
I hear some similarities, especially towards the beginning of Satriani's song, before he takes off into Long-ass Guitar Solo Land. The similarities I hear are both in the refrain of the lead melody, and also in the general rhythm and underlying chord progression. Later I will attempt to compare the sheet music of the two songs to see if I can more specifically identify the similarities and determine how exact they are.
